Florida

We spent quite awhile in the Tampa area and have discovered MANY raw food 'gems'.

There are two health food stores within a 5 mile bike riding distance from where we stayed. Abby's (http://local.yahoo.com/details?fr=dd-local-tl2&id=14469224&stx=abby%27s&csz=Tampa+FL&ed=KOSGkK160Szhw2ydqo2S4FU5V8MjGRBU0_MLjXMCr3esRPDYqo22jHRxTIpZPCXTfX1aG8ET9OiEBGh9KQ--)and Nutrition S'mart..(http://www.nutritionsmart.com/retailer/store_templates/ret_custom_page4.asp?storeID=8DL33QDQR2S92LR50G03N0ET95B5AVQ4). they are both on Dale Mabry Highway in the Carrollwood Area of Tampa, which is in North Tampa.

There is a Wild Oats (http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=33165013&stx=wild+oats&csz=Tampa+FL&ed=ATqwx6160Sy5VxaPrR9PDd3q.Lo_lISd53nucDYDfVCdykwdoqX2J7nLKmRB1udvoE8B3R4yhgVSH_2x) in South Tampa it is also off Dale Mabry, but on the South End of town and can be easily seen from the highway (I275)
Because William is retired military, we have access to the commissary on Mac Dill AFB which has some organic foods.

We spent about three weeks in Tampa and discovered two great Raw Foods establishments: Grass Roots, which is a Vegan and Raw Rest. They host a meet-up potluck the first Sunday of the month. (http://www.thegrassrootlife.com/)
Also is The Glass Onion, (glassoniontampa.com) which hosts a raw food meet-up on the third Sunday of the month. (http://rawfood.meetup.com/332/?gj=sj35) The Owner, Clint, also holds yoga classes and raw UN-cooking classes. Check it out!!
I told Clint I'd put the word out if anyone is looking for a business partnership in a Raw Vegan business that is ready to take off to look him up!!
Also, we had the pleasure of meeting Manny and Josh owners of Empowered Foods (http://empoweredfoods.com/) who have the BEST raw chocolates we have ever tasted!!
By the way... it is rumored that they are looking to sell the business... again, anyone looking for a business parnership, The Glass Onion would be a perfect production and business location!! Call Clint!!

Sarasota was our next stop where we discovered a few organic places and a raw restaurant!
Jessicas Organic Farm (http://www.jessicasorganicfarm.com/) Which had some of the most AMAZING greens I have ever encountered!!
The Granary, which has two locations in Sarasota is a "grocery store" type business. Small but relatively complete in what they sell. Much organic produce, bulk items and just about everything one would need to create any raw food dish!! (http://local.yahoo.com/details?fr=dd-local-tl2&id=14596647&stx=the+granary&csz=Sarasota+FL&ed=k56RYa160SwZH.F1XiCRzfiMbyHMtWxF227gQLRDvSdoRNSt8sqZlO.8MYvc_.CrOh_pvxJyjwOYXlJ.OQ--) and (http://local.yahoo.com/details?fr=dd-local-tl1&id=14588111&stx=the+granary&csz=Sarasota+FL&ed=D4Xm7K160Swm3kR8OzEsqcUKBr8ySw8G_diWBS.yib.f5lWRl6rKFP6nH8egbo4YpBxLAsM-)
We found a new raw restaurant in Sarasota called Veggie Magic (http://www.veggiemagic.com/index.html) owned by Raw food film documentary star Jenna Norwood, Supercharge me 30 days raw (http://www.superchargeme.com/) They also have Raw Potlucks which can be found on Meetup.com.
In Miami we have Glaser Organic Farms (http://www.glaserorganicfarms.com/) which is open on Saturdays from 10am till dark. Home of South Florida's oldest organic farmers market. This lively event takes place in a beautiful open air market with South Florida's widest selection of freshly harvested organic fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains and dried fruits. Come hungry and enjoy our unique raw foods deli, featuring Sprouted Spreads, Gourmet Salads, Giant Nori Rolls, fresh squeezed juices, and astonishingly beautiful raw fruit pies.
Talk to and buy direct from the farmer that grows your food.
In St Augustine Florida is The Present Moment Cafe (http://www.thepresentmomentcafe.com/menu.htm) we have not been there, but it looks wonderful!!
We did have the opportunity to visit the Hippocreates Institute in West Palm Beach... they have tours and on Wednesdays and Saturdays you can enjoy lunch for $20. The last Thursday of every month they have question and answers with free food sampling! (http://www.hippocratesinst.com/)
On the way to Key West there are a few places of interst: In Homestead, FL, there is an organic Fruit and Veggie stand called "Robert is Here"(http://www.robertishere.com/#)
Somewhere in that same area is reported to be an establishment called "Friends of the Fruit and Spice Park (http://www.fruitandspicepark.org/friends/) this is another place we have yet to visit, if we do visit, we will report on our findings!!
On the way to Key West is a small shop that sells fresh smoothies and juices, it is located on Big Pine Key and is called Good Food Conspiracy (http://www.bigpinegoodfood.com/).
In Key West is The Waterfront Market which has a large assortment of organic foods and a juice bar on the second floor.
Also located in Key West is Rita Romano, author of Dining in the Raw. Rita was a raw foods chef at Hippocrates for MANY years and when she is not off traveling and uncooking for other events, she hosts a raw food potluck on Tuesday evenings.
Rita was the one who introduced us to the Raw Food lifestyle three years ago!! (http://www.rawkitchen.com/)

So far that is our Florida listing... last year we had occasion to visit MANY other locations, i hindsight were 20/20 I would have that info available now!!

Georgia

We spent 4 days in Georgia. Decatur to be exact, and HAD to include the most AMAZING market we have ever been to!!
DeKelb World Market!
This had to be the largest "farmers market" we have ever been to! It is indoors and has produce from all over the world. Rows and rows of every type of veggie or fruit you could ever imagine! I was even able to find a durian!! I have never had a durian before... and after smelling one I may never be "allowed" to have one again! LOL...
The market has MUCH in the way of organic fruits and veggies and the prices are amazing!! We found them to be MUCH less expensive than any other stores we had been to and they were in most cases the same or only a little more expensive than the conventional fruits and veggies. They also sold fresh squeezed, unpasturized juices (orange, grapefruit, orange zinger, carrot, and green juices) as well as having a large salad bar for those looking for something raw to eat. We were quite pleased with the salad bar as it offered a plethura of shredded veggies and additions, and the price was just $5.99 a lb!
With that market within a miles bikeride we had no need to venture into any other stores, but we were advised there was a restraunt that served one raw food meal a day in downtown Atlanta... unfortunately we are not aware of the name of it, as we did not discover this hidden jem until after we left the area. But you can be sure we will be going there next year!

The Past week...

After our weekend we were actually looking forward to our quarterly fast! We know that it will clear out the toxins and heal us....
here we are Sunday and we are MUCH better... we still have a trace of a cough... but we won't feel the full effects until we begin refeeding!!
The 24 hours we "fed" we had primarily a "juice day":
cherry tomato/ carrot juice, watermellon juice, apple/beet/fennel juice for lunch... and a salad with butternut squash "pasta", sundried cherry tomatoes, baby bella mushrooms in a pesto sauce... all raw...
I had promised myself that if I didn't go for those caramel hershey bars and milkey ways that are calling me from the office, that I could have something sweet.... I had actually promised myself figs... but when I went to the store they were OUT... so I settled for turkish apricots.... they were good... I had about 6 of them, with no need to consume the entire bag... even though my plan is to fast again for the next 6 days... and feed for 24 hours again on juices and raw....
I decided I will let my body completely recover from the effects of the "drugs" that are in it before I give it another "drug" to fight off!!
All our food (except the apricots) came from Wolfe Pine Farm in Alfred Maine...
Next Sunday we will refine the recipe and it will become part of the "TTT" Uncook book!!
TRiNiTy's Tried and True Uncookbook Recipies...

The Commonground Fair, Unity Maine

We discovered a little too late that we could have been volunteers at the fair... definately in keeping with our "fair energy exchange" way of living!! This, however, was not our year to volunteer!!
There is a story before the story though....
We were originally planning on heading for Unity on Thursday evening and staying at Diversity Farms in Troy... overnight before heading for a clients for a weekend intensive. We finished up our "work" for the week here at the campground all in one day (Tuesday) and decided to head up North a little early.... and our clients just wanted us there... it didn't matter when we showed up! Because Monday the 24th marked our quarterly fast, we did not pick up our farm share this week, nor did we purchase any groceries... the plan was to consume all that was in the trailer... a lot of that consisted of cooked foods..... we ate raw for breakfast and lunch... and simple organic cooked dinners... beans and greens with organic brown rice pasta.... YUM!! As well as portobello mushroom burgers, made with organic brown rice on a sprouted grain english muffin with a slice of beefsteak tomato.... again.... yum!!
Our "meals" consisted of salads, melons, apples, carrots and fresh cherry tomatoes (the likes of these I have never experienced before in my life!! SWEET!!!!) which we dipped into fresh pesto (made raw, no cheeses added.... a little miso for that salty flavor) or our AMAZING Rawsome veggie dip... even though the majority of our days consisted of raw meals, it appears that eating that one cooked meal a day was showing us it was not the right way to go about this whole eating thing, because about two days into this eating cooked everyday lifestyle, my body began to "revolt".... and kicked mucus production into overdrive!! By the time we made it North to visit some clients the body was pretty pursuasive about what it did not like and was not happy about being subjected to!!..... just in time to visit some clients who were smokers.... HEAVY smokers!! Did I mention they also had 2 dogs and two cats!! With allergens added to irritants and mucus it was the beginning of an interesting " working vacation "!!
Needless to say, it didn't take long before the body began revolting full force!! 2 days into being there my nose was runny and raw, my lungs were full and wheezing was easily audible and I was now the proud owner of a cough that sounded remotely familiar.... it reminded me of the pnumonia cough I used to get twice a year when I myself was a heavy smoker!!
My appetite had just about subsided, I couldn't really smell or taste anything!! Funny how the body, in its infinite wisdom methodically goes about its own way of healing!! Friday marked the day of the fair... we got up "early" showered and headed out.... we had packed anticipating cooler weather than we have, as they are farther north, and the weather turned out to be in the 80's!! This was actually OK though, beyond the fact that a beautiful, sunny, warm day was actually a Godsend, when my body finally did decide to spike a fever to kill off those nasty energies that just were not welcome in it, I didn't get the chills at all!! AND being a "little" overdressed, surprisingly I didn't really sweat too much either!!
We stuck to water for our drinks.... and when it came time to eat, surprisingly meat was not really even a consideration... I was already experiencing the wrath of my body concerning my decisions of what I had been exposing it to.... I really didn't want to know what meat would feel like added to that!! Even though it was organic meat....
The entry to the fair was lined with farmers market style booths all selling fresh fruits and veggies....I bought three apples.... William and I each ate one, I carried the other in my pocket..... as we exited we purchased a 2lb bag of fresh oranic carrots and two pints of "orange" cherry tomatoes.... I thought they were the same variety as the AMAZING ones we have at the farm.... they may have been, however, they weren't nearly as sweet. Our clients purchased a flat of organic tomatoes as they have an AMAZING chili sauce family recipe which they decided to make the next batch organic and spare the white sugar, opting instead for organic maple syrup... wherein it was cooked anyway, this really made no difference. And I would have to interject here, that I believe adding that VERY SPICY chili sauce to my diet really assisted in removing some of that built up mucus!
Once we were actually IN the fairgrounds we walked about for awhile looking at what the fair was about...What we saw of the fair was great... organic farmers products, sustainable living items, LOTS of crafts and jewels, and the livestock, which here, more than anywhere it is imperative that people don't "feed the animals"!! (We later found out that of the food available at the fair they were a little more lienient about whom they allowed... I guess at one time one could go to the fair knowing that whatever they ate was organic and from Maine... this years fair was a little different!! Booths selling non organic meats, vendors from New Hampshire... I'm glad we did not choose to eat any of the meats there!! Although I also wish I had known that in the beginning, as I would have scrutinized my food choices and made sure that onion was organic!!)
We chose a veggie lazagna as our first cooked option.... later we added roasted eggplant and hummus.... on a wrap.... just before leaving we hunted down the "bloomin onion" of which I could eat very little as by this point eating had lost its appeal...my stomach, was full of mucus and I couldn't really taste it and enjoy the flavor anyways!! Not to mention fever had kicked in and the relentless, tight, non-productive cough came with a bonus migrane headache and "vomiting". That cough till the contents of your stomach begin to exit.... mmmmmmmm.... gotta love that!!
We left the fair at 3pm and headed back to our clients house.
Once back to our clientss my body gave me an order loud and clear "LIE DOWN NOW!!!!!" Because we understand that disease is the failure of the immune system, overburdened by cumulative assaults from the environment, even when we "place" ourselves into that enviornment....
I listened!! Five hours later and wringing buckets of sweat out of my clothes and the sheets I was up and feeling MUCH better!!
I had contemplated beginning my fast right then and there, but my body was asking for watermellon.... which I had.... yummy yellow organic watermellon from Wolf Pine Farm.... it was nothing short of AMAZING!!! Once back in the house, I strategically postitoned myself in front of a small fan to ensure a constant stream of moving air past me... hopefully limiting my exposure to second hand smoke considerably.... this "self-inflicted" assult to my body was short lived as we headed off to bed...I managed to go back to sleep a few hours later and sleep very soundly well into the next morning...
Later that day we headed for Diversity farms and fresh clean air!
We settled in to the farm and got a tour of the milking barn, the cheese room, walkins, the pig area and chicken area...The farm is currently in the process of incorporating the cheese and butter and milk areas to it... it was yet undone, but definately easy to see what the finished product would look like!! The milking barn is complete... by spring it should be a working milk farm as well as organic egg, chicken, beef and pork farm!!
The farm itslf was equipped with 37 camping sites, outhouses and showers... he also supplied camp fire wood entertainment and refreshments!! There was supposed to be a bonfire.... part of the reason we changed our plans of "when" we wanted to go there.... but we did have a small campfire with an up close performance by I believe the Gawler Family.... don't quote me on that one though!!
The thing I found the most ironic, was that with the world as my oyster to choose ANYTHING that I might want to be eating on my last days before an extended fast and my last days of eating cooked and "not good" foods again... I would have thought I would have gravitated towards more "bad" (I don't like that word!!) foods... but I wanted apples, mellons, carrots and tomatoes.... OK OK.... so I wanted M&M's too!! But they actually got thrown out!! As did everything else that would not be good to eat and couldn't be dehydrated...
right now my dehydrator is running with the tomatoes and blueberries that were not consumed.... I know I will have PLENTY of sundried tomatoes for the winter!!
It is getting late and this is the end of the second day of our fast!!

Missouri Raw and Organic foods

When we first embarked on our raw foods venture we were living in Missouri for the fall.
We were able to locate a few key places to obtain good quality organic produce as well as our bulk needs (nuts, seeds, grains and spices)
Jeans Healthfood store in Ava was home to a HUGE bulk section and many necessities, as well as Mama Jeans in Springfield, which is just like Jeans but on a MUCH larger scale!!
For farm fresh organic produce there is a small organic farmer in Theodosia named Jack... who owns Ozark Exoticas and he sells the FINEST baby spinach, basil, parsley and herbs one can find!! His goods are found at Mama Jeans in Springfield... try out his salad by the inch!!
We found the grocery stores to be somewhat lacking in their organic produce offerings during our stay in Theodosia... Thank GOD for Jack!!
Just over the border in Arkansas (Mountain Homme) we were able to find a nice Natural food store as well....

Of course there was Super Wally World, which did have a good supply of organic apples, carrots, oranges, tomatoes and salads....

Massachusetts Organic Produce and Raw foods

Massachusetts was the state we called home for many years... although they have recently implemented a new "law" that requires all Mass. residents to have health insurance!!Since we have never seen anything offered that resembled "health care" or "health insurance" (disease care, yes... health care?? NO!!) we no longer associate with being residents of that state!!
But having been long term residents there we do have the scoop on the health food stores and best places to get organic produce.

Obviously we are biased as we know of the places where we lived.... and this list is not inclusive, so if something is missing feel free to add to my list!!

On the North Shore we have a coupleWhole Foods Markets.... there is one in Bedford MA (which I personally LOVE) and one in Winchester. There is a Trader Joes in Middleton off 114. On Route 1 in the Saugus area there is a Wild Oats.
The Grocery stores in Mass. still have a ways to go in bulking up their organic sections, but in a pinch one can find organic basics.

Newburyport has a wonderful Natural foods market... The Natural Grocer, they are limited on their organic produce, but still carry more than any of the local grocers. Great place to get a smoothie, raw juice or wheatgrass shots!! They have a really good bulk section and are pretty accomodating when it comes to ordering special items for you!!

For raw food... DEFINATELY the Organic Garden Cafe 294 Cabot St., Beverly, MA!! All I can say is AMAZING!! If you go, you MUST try the brownie with vanilla bean ice cream!!

Maine Raw and Organic foods

Since we spend about 5 months of our year in Maine I thought I should include some of the organic and raw food sources we have located here...

For organic foods Hannafords Markets have come a long way.... we happen to be in the Old Orchard Beach area... and the Saco and Biddeford Hannafords both have a really nice Natures Market Place section with bulk foods and a decent selection of produce.
Also in Saco and Biddeford are Shaws Markets with their Natures Harvest Marketplace....
I don't like to give props to Wally World, but on our travels it has become necessary to utilize them to procure organic veggies and fruits... Super Wally Worlds obviously.... they have Newmans own and cascadia farms as well as a few others.... we will only purchase USA grown organic foods, and many places carry stuff grown in Peru, Chili and many other countries.... if anyone knows of the organic "codes" in foreign countries I would be interested in learning about their standards.... but until then I will stick to the stuff grown right here!!

Just North of us in Portland we have an AMAZING Whole Foods store, and a Wild Oats (apparently they will be merging soon... I assume one of them will go and it won't be whole foods!!)
For organic treats (not raw) there is Maples.. a small ice creamery, which has amazing flavors of Sorbettis and Gelatos.... as well as baked goods (I hear... never been there though)

Wolf Pine Farm is an organic CSA farm which runs about 20 weeks and supplies some 250 families with organic produce shares....

Diversity Farms in Troy Maine has organic beef, chicken, pork, cheese and eggs.... they are also going to be working with schools offering farm field trips to teach kids about what it takes to bring something like a pizza to your table (taking them through the wheat cutting/harvesting/drying/milling, milking cows for cheese production, tomatoes for the sauce.... and the end result... an organic pizza party!!)

Post Family Farm sells organic raw milks.

And this is the time of year when we can visit the Common Ground Fair in Unity Maine, this year it will be held from September 21st through the 23rd... they have all organic farmers who show and sell their goods... we have never been before so after we attend we will post about it!!

I have heard rumor of an organic pick your own blueberry farm near Alfred Maine... if anyone has any specific about this I would appreciate it!!
Wolf Pine Farm sells organic blueberries... as well, I will have to get the info on where they come from!
There are a BUNCH of organic farms here in Maine and a few farmers markets... one in Portland and one in Saco....

South of us in Kittery there is a raw food potluck that happens the third Saturday of every month.... we have been and it is AMAZING!! The proprietor Amy, has an inside track with David Wolfe and carries many of his products for sale.
Organic apples are now available from Raven Hill Orchard in Waterboro, this is their first year in business!! Lets show them our support!!

In Scarborough we have Lois Natural foods... right on Rt 1. They have a full grocery as well as a health and beauty aids section with supplements and the likes....
A good sized bulk section, bulk olive oils and many fresh organic veggies and fruits!!
